Who I Listen To When I’m Thinking About the Markets
As a financial planner and investor, I’m always learning.
When I’m working in the office, I spend a lot of time listening to people who have different perspectives on the markets, the economy, business and investing.
I get asked from time to time:
“Dave, who do you listen to?”
There are three people I particularly enjoy hearing from: Vance Howard, Cathie Wood and Thomas Lee.
I don’t agree with everything I hear from any of them. That’s actually part of the reason I listen.
I want to understand how other people are looking at the world — what they see happening in the economy, what they believe could drive markets and where they see opportunities or risks.
Why I Listen to Different Perspectives
One thing I've learned over the years is that investing isn't about finding one person who has all the answers.
Markets are complicated. The economy is complicated. And nobody knows exactly what is going to happen next.
That's why I like listening to different perspectives and then thinking about how those ideas apply to the people I work with.
I'm learning every day, too.
That's an important part of being a financial planner. I don't believe my job is simply to tell people what to buy or sell. My job is to understand what is happening, ask good questions and help my clients make decisions that fit their goals, circumstances and tolerance for risk.
A Conversation With Cathie Wood
I recently listened to this conversation with Cathie Wood and thought it was worth sharing.
She discusses her views on innovation, artificial intelligence, the economy and the potential impact these developments could have on financial markets.
You may agree with her perspective. You may disagree.
Either way, I think there is value in listening to thoughtful people explain why they believe what they believe.

Keep Learning. Keep Asking Questions.
Whether you're managing a retirement portfolio, running a business, building wealth or simply trying to understand what's happening in the markets, there is a lot of information coming at you every day.
My advice is simple: don't just listen to one voice.
Listen. Ask questions. Look at different perspectives. And then make decisions based on your own situation.
That's what I try to do every day — and it's one of the reasons I enjoy what I do.
If something you hear in this interview raises a question about your own investments, retirement plan or financial strategy, reach out to me.
I'm always happy to have a conversation.
